Rafting in Goa

The fans of activity holidays and thrills can add to their list of adventures the rafting in Goa (White River rafting). In the monsoon season (June — October) they offer to tourists the rafting down the Mandovi River, which flows through the Western Ghats.

Base camp Veluz is located outside the village Valpoi, in the region Sattari taluka, in the western part of Goa. It is about 45 km from Panaji, 47 km from Margao and 60 km from Dabolim.

The route is about 10 km, the starting point is near the village of Ustam, the final destination is the village of Sonal. This section of the Mandovi River is referred to II and III complexity class (the highest is VI), that means the rapids of middle complexity, numerous waves, narrow passages, here and there the protruding rock formations, small whirlpools. Simply speaking, it’s the perfect place for novice rafters including children.

The rafting takes about half an hour, there are two courses a day: at 11:00 and at 14:00. You must arrive at the starting point half an hour earlier than the rafting start for instructions and safety procedures. The minimal age of participant is 10 years (can be younger, but in any case, taller than 1.22 m), there is no age limit. The rafts can seat about 4 to 10 passengers. The floating is allowed for healthy people, weighing less 120 kg and in sober state. The swimming ability is not required. It’s recommended to bring sportswear, strong summer footwear, swimming suit, sunscreen and drinking water. You will not be allowed to take a mobile phone, camera or photo camera, wallets and jewelry.

The price is 1,500 rupees per person (about 18 £) that includes a one-time rafting on the route indicated by a qualified guide and the provision of rafts, pedals, rafting equipment, light snacks and beverages at the end of the event.

The special section for online reservations with the Goan Tourism Development Corporation in (GTDC) allows you to order and pay online:http://bookings.goa-tourism.com/cruises1.aspx. You can also email us at:[email protected]. After the payment you receive the confirming document via email, which you need to print and bring to the base camp on the day of the rafting.

There is cash payment at the GTDC offices in Calangute, Miramar, Panaji, Mapusa, Colva, Vasco, Dabolim Airport, on Lake Mayem, in Old Goa and Margao. The tour conducting depends on the weather and on the number of participants, so organizers recommend in any case to pre-contact clarifying the circumstances and conditions.

How to get there?

The base camp is located 800 meters from the bus parking in Valpoi. One can also reach it by taxi or motorcycle rickshaw. If you come by own transportation, you will be offered to park it in the guarded parking lot of the base camp. To the start point of the floating and from the final destination back to the base rafters’ camp one will be delivered by local transport operators. The price is about 150 rupees per person (about 1.80 £). And if you have your own driver, he can take you to the starting point of the rafting route and expect you at the final point. In this case, you will not pay the extra fees.
